Abstract:
The increasing competition at international level and the growing gap between Italy and the other industrialized countries are both extremely worrying. Some authors believe that Italy has already missed the train and that it will play a marginal role in the future global economy. As far as the pharmaceutical sector is concerned, focused interventions and joint efforts are needed to make Italy gain the ground again and take the place it deserves. To re-launch the pharmaceutical sector in Italy a new breeding ground for research and development is needed and focused interventions should be drafted and implemented in several directions: introduction of incentives for the industrial research; strengthening of the legislative framework for the protection of intellectual property; enhanced dynamism and courage from industry itself, boosted by a constructive networking with the Ministry of Health and the Italian Drug Agency; finally, the development of synergies and interactions between University and industry.
