Communicating utilization and critical issues to health providers
ASHP Annual Meeting 2001 Jun; 58:
Abstract:
Various methods and tools for communication of critical issues to health providers are described. Development, implementation, cause and effect of physician prescription profiles, utilized over the past three years, have made a significant impact on physician prescribing habits as well as physician awareness of prescribing practices. Concomitant development of departmental profiles has proven useful as a tool for communication of pharmacy related practice guidelines to physician groups. Generic sampling combined with directed academic detailing and quarterly physician lunch meetings serve as the catalyst for delivering critical issue messages. Learning objectives: 1. Identify three possible components of physician prescription profiles. 2. Describe the role of physician leadership and committee involvement for physician profiling. 3. Discuss pros and cons of generic sampling as a tool used in academic detailing. Self-assessment questions: True or false: 1. Physician leadership involvement is not critical for a successful physician prescription profile program. 2. Departmental summaries facilitate a nonthreatening environment for communication with physician groups. 3. Directed academic detailing should be left to the pharmaceutical industry. Answers: 1. F; 2. T; 3. F.
