Congress debates PBMs and medicare while FDA considers changes to DTC regulation

Abstract:

A heated battle between pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) and retail pharmacists has erupted in Washington as Congress weighs whether PBMs would administer the proposed Medicare pharmacy benefit. Retail pharmacists say such a program would greatly boost the use of PBM mail-order services to fill a substantial volume of prescriptionsfor the elderly, which would drive business away from local pharmacies. Regulators seek to clarify risk information requirements in direct-to-consumer (DTC) ads while encouraging comparative drug studies.

A small group known as Healthy Skepticism; formerly the Medical Lobby for Appropriate Marketing) has consistently and insistently drawn the attention of producers to promotional malpractice, calling for (and often securing) correction. These organisations [Healthy Skepticism, Médecins Sans Frontières and Health Action International] are small, but they are capable; they bear malice towards no one, and they are inscrutably honest. If industry is indeed persuaded to face up to its social responsibilities in the coming years it may well be because of these associations and others like them.
