What does having a Pfizer sponsored and owned home-page do for you that a normal ISP homepage doesn’t?
And, more to the point, what does your participating in this process do for Pfizer?
To answer the first question-
1/. Provision of goodies. eg –

“When you log on for the first time; at the click of a button you will have the option to populate your favourites and documents with peer-reviewed internet sites and documents. You can later add / edit or delete these at your convenience.
Save time!
Your frequently used sites are only a click away
Access COMPLIMENTARY offers, competitions and conference updates
Your favourite links, easily categorised the way you like by simply dragging and dropping
Complimentary Special interest journal article reprints delivered to your surgery.
Lodge a medical query, request starter packs or contact our Helpdesk.
The 3D Body System with over 1000 images, 150 videos and models will save consultation time in explaining medical conditions (eg. Osteoarthritic knee) or medical procedures (eg. Angiogram) to your patients.
Access securely stored documents outside work.
Opt-in for a complimentary surgery website where you can advertise your practice and easily customise the contents.
A complimentary peer reviewed, quarterly surgery newsletter. Special Surgery Announcements can be displayed here, eg. Flu vaccine availability
The Surgery set-up wizard will provide you a quick start populating the Useful links and articles section with peer-reviewed information. You can however change these the way you want them, providing your patients with links to authoritative disease information websites that YOU have selected.
Patients have access to over 1000 images and 150 short videos on medical conditions and procedures.”

2/. One would need to register to find out the full range of free goodies available. I suspect one would also receive requests to pass on information about one’s prescribing habits and practice data. Some of these dot points look like the usual range of freebies but for some there is an intrinsic quid pro quo.
For example,-
(i). Handing over the education of your patients to Pfizer to ‘educate’ via videos and via the quarterly surgery newsletter gives Pfizer direct access to advertise their drugs/company to your patients.
(ii). Taking on this system gives Pfizer much greater capacity to influence the doctor through selective presentation of information on the website, free samples which will influence subsequent prescribing patterns and the sense of mutual obligation which the doctor will feel towards Pfizer.
(iii). Allowing Pfizer to install its software on the medical practice computer sytem, potentially allows Pfizer to access the information in the financial, prescribing and clinical databases which means they could theoretically eliminate the middle-men from the data collection process- ie they can bypass Medical Director/HCN and CAMM (which is the mechanism by which pharmaceutical companies currently collect data from doctors who are participating in the process of selling their medical record and prescribing data via links from their computers to the internet).

The unquestioning acceptance of websites such as this by most representative professional medical bodies reflects the ongoing failure of ethical leadership from these organisations.
