Abstract:

Hospitals and clinics are saying no to gifts from drug and device makers.

In January, St. Mary’s Duluth Clinic Health System (SMDC) drew national attention when it went cold turkey off freebies from vendors-purging every logoed item from its 17 clinics and four hospitals. Employees collected 18,700 items, the equivalent of 20 shopping carts worth: clipboards, notepads, mouse pads, clocks, mugs, tape dispensers, surgical caps, calculators, pens, and a foam Allegra nose that says “That’s snot funny.”…
