Abstract:

Eli Lilly says study shows antidepressant Cymbalta reduces pain from knee osteoarthritis

Full text:

Eli Lilly and Co. on Friday said a study showed its antidepressant Cymbalta reduced pain in patients suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee.
The drug maker said in a 13-week study of 231 patients, 59 percent of patients treated with Cymbalta had a 30 percent improvement in pain, compared with 45 percent of patients on placebo. In addition, 47 percent of Cymbalta patients experienced a 50 percent reduction in pain compared with 29 percent of placebo patients.

The drug is approved to treat diabetic nerve pain and generalized anxiety disorder, a condition characterized by exaggerated worry or chronic anxiety and irritability, and may include physical symptoms like muscle tension, restlessness and insomnia.

Osteoarthritis of the knee affects about 10 million Americans.
