Swiss pharmaceutical company, Roche, has launched a new international research grant scheme for scientists involved in collaborative projects between the industry and academic institutions.
The scheme will replace the current Roche Research Foundation (RRF), which will cease operating by the end of 2008. It is hoped that the new autonomous foundation will promote young talent and research excellence in Switzerland.

Scientists who are awarded a grant under the recently launched Roche Postdoc Fellowship (RPF) programme will benefit from scientific mentoring from the company and its academic partners. The company aims to award 100 postdoctoral fellowships in various areas of therapeutic research over the next two years, with a long-term view of expanding the RPF into an international scheme.

“We believe firmly that in setting up this programme we are making an important contribution to scientific excellence at international level,” said Dr René Imhof, designated head of the RPF programme. “Out intention is to channel the positive momentum generated by the RRF into the new, much broader Roche Postdoc Fellowship programme and continue its success there.”

Roche plans to unveil an internet site for the scheme during the 4th quarter of 2008 that will include further information about the RPF and an online application system.

Far too large a section of the treatment of disease is to-day controlled by the big manufacturing pharmacists, who have enslaved us in a plausible pseudo-science...
The blind faith which some men have in medicines illustrates too often the greatest of all human capacities - the capacity for self deception...
Some one will say, Is this all your science has to tell us? Is this the outcome of decades of good clinical work, of patient study of the disease, of anxious trial in such good faith of so many drugs? Give us back the childlike trust of the fathers in antimony and in the lancet rather than this cold nihilism. Not at all! Let us accept the truth, however unpleasant it may be, and with the death rate staring us in the face, let us not be deceived with vain fancies...
we need a stern, iconoclastic spirit which leads, not to nihilism, but to an active skepticism - not the passive skepticism, born of despair, but the active skepticism born of a knowledge that recognizes its limitations and knows full well that only in this attitude of mind can true progress be made.
- William Osler 1909
