HMO pharmacy directors' opinions of acquisition of pharmacy benefit management companies.
Am J Health Syst Pharm 1995 Jul 15; 52:(14):1547-9

Abstract:

The results of a survey of 190 health maintenance organization (HMO) directors’ opinions on acquisition of pharmacy benefit management companies (PBMs) by drug manufacturers are presented. Of the 190 surveyed, 68 (36%) responded. Results conveyed the initial concerns of the directors about the integration of pharmaceutical manufacturers and PBMs. One-third of the directors gave a neutral response when asked whether they were encouraged by the mergers. More than three-quarters of the directors believed the mergers would help pharmaceutical manufacturers maintain their product lines. Most respondents strongly agreed that PBM-manufacturer mergers could have a potentially inappropriate influence on formulary decisions.

What these howls of outrage and hurt amount to is that the medical profession is distressed to find its high opinion of itself not shared by writers of [prescription] drug advertising. It would be a great step forward if doctors stopped bemoaning this attack on their professional maturity and began recognizing how thoroughly justified it is.
