Reinstein JA.
Marketing medicines for self-medication
Journal of Pharmaceutical Marketing Management 1996; 10:(2-3):31-38

Abstract:

The marketing of drugs for self-medication is examined, including the prescription-to-OTC switch; trade names; distribution; advertising; consequences for pharmacists, physicians, and consumers; the World Health Organization (WHO) recognition of self-medication; and self-medication in developing vs developed countries. It was concluded that responsible self-medication increases self-reliance in health and improves the quality of life for consumers while helping government control health care costs.
