Role of a pharmacy technician in implementing a prescription assistance program for indigent and underinsured patients
ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting 1998 Dec; 33:
Abstract:
Described is the role of a pharmacy technician in implementing a prescription assistance program for indigent and underinsured patients. The Pharmacy Assistance and Information on Reimbursement (PAIR) Program was developed as an institution cost recovery program and to provide cost effective drug acquisition for patients whose drug expenditures create a financial hardship. Technician responsibilities included defining program goals, identifying eligible patients, creating physician and patient databases, documenting request and receipt of drug; maintaining low cost formulary alternative listing for physicians and pharmacists; and monitoring program impact. To date, the program has netted $240,000 in recovered drugs and has served over 375 patients. Future plans include expansion of services to affiliate institutions and measuring impact on readmissions previously caused by noncompliance.
