Abstract:
The surge in prescription drug prices in 1998 and the growing support for Medicare prescription drug benefits are discussed, including the industry’s concern about the congressional mandate to enact patient privacy legislation, the need to encourage generic drug competition, the effect of advertising on demand for expensive therapies, and the regulation of drug safety programs to ensure efficiency.
