OMA takes action on marketing of physician prescribing data: private industry sales raise ethical/legal concerns
Ontario Medical Review 1996; 63:(4):32-33
Abstract:
The Ontario Medical Association is concerned about the purchase of physician prescribing data by private industry for use in targeting physicians by pharmaceutical companies. The Ontario College of Pharmacists believes that paticipating pharmacists understand that they are providing only aggregate data and appear to be unaware of the collection of individual prescriber data. In Quebec this practice is against the law and in British Columbia the government has banned the sale of such information. The OMA has recommended to the College of Pharmacists that such sales only be allowed with the expressed permission of doctors.
