Conflicts of interest and the Journal’s policies
New England Journal of Medicine 1994; 330:503-504
Abstract:
If the New England Journal of Medicine editors are sincere in their claim that information on conflict of interest does not influence the publication decision then they should request such information after a decision to publish an article has been made. The policy to automatically reject review articles written by employees of pharmaceutical companies creates a blacklist and there is no evidence that the benefits of protecting readers from dangerously slanted writings outweighs the harm caused by such a blacklist.
