Independent investigators and for-profit companies: guidelines for biomedical scientists considering funding by industry
Archives of Dermatology 1994; 130:432-437
Abstract:
This article proposes guidelines for physician-scientists who are considering funding by for-profit companies. These guidelines cover nine topics: 1) all obligations of the scientist and the company should be defined in a detailed contract; 2) a nonprofit institutional intermediary should be responsible for all communications between the scientist and the company; 3) scientific freedom of the independent investigator should be preserved; 4) the scientist retains ownership of data and publication rights; 5) the scientist controls the use of his or her name in promotions; 6) funding for a project should not be contingent on results; 7) reimbursement for a study should equal the direct and indirect costs of the work; 8) certain relationships between scientists and for-profit companies during the time of the research should be limited; 9) specific rules about disclosure of relationships with for-profit companies should be implemented.
