Promotion and advertising of therapeutic goods: final report
1992 Jul

Abstract:

This is the report of a wide ranging inquiry in Australia into the promotion of prescription and nonprescription drugs, natural therapies and medical devices. It discusses: Australian Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association’s Code of Conduct; marketing problems and the effectiveness of the code in addressing these problems; the effectiveness of the APMA’s complaints procedure; adherence to the code by industry; and administrative arrangements regarding the code. These same issues are reviewed for the code of the Proprietary Medicines Association of Australia.

There is no sin in being wrong. The sin is in our unwillingness to examine our own beliefs, and in believing that our authorities cannot be wrong. Far from creating cynics, such a story is likely to foster a healthy and creative skepticism, which is something quite different from cynicism.”
- Neil Postman in The End of Education
