Abstract:

Since 1988, drug promotion in Australia has been governed by a voluntary code from the Australian Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association. The APMA code is deficient compared to the World Health Organization’s Ethical Criteria for Medicinal Drug Promotion but its complaints procedure has improved over the last two years. However, sanctions are still very weak and companies can avoid the provisions of the code by resigning from the APMA as Smith Kline & French recently did.
