Abstract:

Recent legislation designed to ensure the confidentiality of patient records is summarized and discussed in the context of an incident in which 2 chain pharmacies shared electronic patient records with a marketing firm; the issues of patient confidentiality and the role of pharmacists in protecting patients’ privacy are also discussed. The conflict between the ethics of the pharmacy profession and the practices of drug manufacturers and pharmacy providers, defined as owners of businesses that supply prescription drugs to the public, is described.
