Abstract:

A brief description of the Medicaid program is provided and its increasing reliance on managed care as a vehicle for cost saving is discussed, including trends in Medicaid fee-for-service expenditures and Medicaid managed care growth, and managed care plans and their organization. An overview of the methods and procedures (including pharmacy benefit management and drug formularies) used by managed care plans to influence the purchase of prescription drugs, and their impact on the pharmaceutical industry is presented and problems that Medicaid has in enrolling certain types of Medicaid recipients are described.
