Altruism and the scientific congress
Lancet 1996; 347:377-378
Abstract:
Scientific congress organizers increasingly seek the support from the biomedical industry in the form of donations, sponsorship of lectures, payment for various items and encouragement to pay the travel and subsistence costs of delegates. This practice has lead to a number of adverse results. The United European Gastroenterology Federation has drawn up guidelines for organizers of its annual meeting which allow an annual meeting of high scientific quality to be run cheaply and without the risk of commercial exploitation.
