Kassirer JP, Angell M.
Financial conflicts of interest in biomedical research.
N Engl J Med 1993 Aug 19; 329:(8):570-1

Abstract:

Financial conflicts of interest in medicine constitute one of the most contentious issues in the medical profession. In 1984, the New England Journal of Medicine announced a policy on conflicts of interests for its authors. Many arguments have been raised against this policy. This editorial discusses these arguments and rejects them. Financial conflicts will probably continue to be a fact of academic life but they must be responsibly regulated, with disclosure being a minimal requirement.
