Consumers versus producers: power play behind the scenes

Abstract:
This chapter describes the early activities of Health Action International on the topic of pharmaceutical promotion in developing countries, the development of the code of the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Associations and problems associated with its enforcement. The chapter also details the meeting of experts that the World Health Organization convened in Nairobi in 1985 to look at the question of rational use of drugs and the controversies at that meeting.
