The influence of pharmaceutical industry advertising on physician prescribing
Journal of Drug Issues 1992; 22:331-338
Abstract:
The pharmaceutical industry liberally supplies physicians with information on new drugs. Multiple advertising techniques are used to relay this information. Preliminary evidence suggests that industry information is valued by many physicians and is often used when making drug therapy decisions. As a result, many agencies and organizations are taking steps to regulate industry marketing and physician prescribing. More research is needed, however, to determine the nature and the degree of the effects of industry-provided information. This information can inform both physicians and policy makers regarding the appropriate role of the pharmaceutical industry in medical practice.
